Commuters Outraged at MTA Fare Hike

August 19, 2025

At a public hearing last Thursday evening,

The MTA announced a fare hike to $3,

despite the increase from $2.75 to $2.90 just 2 years prior.

Many New Yorkers are blasting the "greedy" transit agency,

while others still complain of the worsening condition

of subways.

This fare hike is set to take effect by January 4th of 2026,

taking more from the commuters' already empty wallets.

This fare hike will include all buses, subways,

Transfers, Metro-North, and LIRR (Long Island Rail Road)

one-way, weekly, and monthly tickets.

MTA Fare Hike

There is still hope, as this proposal may be rejected

when it is voted on by the board in fall.

If it wasn't already bad, tolls for many bridges and tunnels

operated by the MTA will see toll hikes,

with tolls going from $6.94 to $7.46 on the RFK,

Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Verrazzano bridges,

the Queens-Midtown and Hugh Carey tunnels.

Reduced fares will go from $1.45 to $1.50.

Express bus fares will increase from $7.00 to $7.25.

Two rolling fare caps will be implemented:

For the subway, a 7-day cap of $36

and $67 for express buses.

(A rolling fare cap sets a maximum total fare within a specific period to protect frequent riders,

making any more trips during that time free.)
